Below is my story as told to The Radical Remission Project.
Love heals us. In December of 2012 I was diagnosed with Gleason 6 rated prostate cancer. The following month I was treated using brachytherapy seeds, which are tiny radiation pellets that are surgically implanted. Over the next 3 years my PSA fluctuated from 0.9 to 3.4 and everywhere in-between. It was stressful while doctors and oncologists were less than helpful or optimistic. The first seed of hope came from a friend who survived colon cancer. He told me “try meditation and visualize the cancer leaving your body.” Over the years, that seed of hope developed into much more.
BRIEFLY DESCRIBE YOUR DIAGNOSIS METHOD AND CONVENTIONAL TREATMENTS, INCLUDING THEIR TIMING. DID THEY HELP AT ALL?
During a routine physical at age 49, my lab work returned with an elevated PSA, which my then physician had determined I should see a urologist. The urologist suggested I schedule a biopsy which came back positive with the Gleason 6 cancer rating. This all happened within a 6 week period.
After several meetings with physicians and cancer specialists, I was urged to have immediate treatment. This was further heightened by the loss of my job a month earlier and my health insurance that was running out in another month.
The treatment I chose was brachytherapy because it was the least invasive and bragged a shorter recovery time that I felt necessary for getting back to looking for work. In retrospect, I’m not sure which treatment if any I would have chosen.
I got through the typical side affects the first six months after treatment and my PSA came back 0.9. I was overjoyed. Then 6 months later it jumped back up to 2.2 and fluctuated up and down for 4 years until 2016.
Maybe the treatment helped. I’m not sure. I am sure that through meditation, prayer, diet, yoga and my spiritual commitment, that I’ve changed the makeup of my body.
PLEASE TELL US YOUR HEALING STORY IN AS MUCH DETAIL AS YOU WOULD LIKE:
Around 2015 I had a dream. In the dream I felt the most complete love I’d ever felt. It is nothing like we feel, or at least I’ve felt being human. I think that was my healing.
I wrote about it in my journal, and also put it into articles and my creative works.
I stated earlier, a friend had planted the seed of mediation and I feel that even though I’ve thought of myself as a student of spirit my entire life, his words interjected this event. Somehow at that exact moment, something took my spirituality up a few notches. I read a lot and I listened more.
I believe my healing was a combination of changing what I put into my body, the food and also the thoughts I’d created myself or let in. I integrated meditation, prayer, yoga and became more focus on my creativity.
I’m an artist and I truly believe that reconnecting with our passion is a direct connection to something higher. We can call it Divine, Universe, God, Love —it doesn’t matter what label or name we call it, it’s that energy that allows us to heal.
There was one other time in my life when I experienced something “supernatural.” In my late teens and early twenty’s I suffered from something called spontaneous pneumothorax or collapsed lungs.
This went on for several years. In and out of hospitals, chest tubes, and eventually double lung surgery. But my point here is that I also had a dream in which a shaman had stood over me in a cave, I was on a stone slab and he waved his hands over me. I knew at that point I was healed.
It’s all very odd. Both the story’s and the dreams associated with them.
But, I believe we have the power to heal. It’s not any one thing that I can say for sure. It’s definitely the food we eat, and how consistently and efficiently we can eliminate the toxins in life. Body, mind, spirit.
Yoga, meditation, exercise, nature, clean air, clean water, prayer, bodywork, massage, supportive friends and like minds are the medicine. It is said that our bodies know how to heal and know how to heal each other even if our human rational mind is unaware of it. I believe that.
So, since 2016 my PSA has been consistent and under 0.4. Gratitude! I forgot gratitude —having gratitude and forgiving are perhaps the biggest tools. They release us.
Lastly, I want to add that we can’t go back to our old habits and lifestyles that made us sick.
Like anything, we have to be true to our health. Maintain a lifestyle of wellbeing and be curios and passionate about life, about people, and about love.
DO YOU HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ABOUT WHAT MAY HAVE CAUSED YOUR HEALTH CHALLENGE IN PARTICULAR, OR WHAT CAUSES IT IN GENERAL?
I think it’s the toxins we are exposed to that make us sick. The toxins are physical, spiritual and emotional. Poor lifestyle choices, unhealthy or contaminated foods and water, not exercising enough. Our negative thoughts and the bombardment of bullying and at times hateful behavior we are exposed to in childhood or throughout life from other people – even the news. Chronic stress. Excessive drinking, drugs, or other things that remove us from healthy choices, environments and people.
